Two American flags and five stranded residents of Louisiana begged for help on top of a dirty building after the wake of Hurricane Katrina. “Help!” The roof read. “The Water is Rising Pleas.” With only a few blankets and a single cushion, the five people, now homeless, hoped for help as they looked longingly to the sky.
International rescue teams came to the aid of Chalmette residents in a heroic effort to help out a bordering nation. Attempts to save an elderly woman came from a rescue team out of Vancouver, Canada. The team traveled to Louisiana to help. Three men fought crowds and carried an elderly woman from her evacuated home to a medical tent. With several family members at her side, the woman died minutes later.
In a long trek away from the wreckage, a young woman sat with her head in her palms for a moment of rest. She wore slip on shoes, denim shorts and a tank top and sat on a curb along Interstate 10. The once congested interstate was free of traffic, and the sky was a foggy grey. Kimi Seymour, 27, now had only the contents of a stolen shopping cart to her name.
